Avanos district, located in the Nevşehir province of our country, is one of the first places that come to mind when it comes to pottery. In addition to being close to touristic regions like Göreme and Ürgüp, the presence of raw material sources in the district is one of the reasons why pottery is highly developed in Avanos. Although the term "pottery" is commonly used to refer to earthen pots, under geographical indication, it refers to all kinds of products made of clay.
Pottery making, which has been continuing since the Neolithic period in Nevşehir, is widespread in the Avanos region. The pottery made was probably obtained from the mountains of Avanos and the old beds of the Kızılırmak river, as it is today, during the Early Bronze Age. It is known that the first pots were shaped by coiling and wrapping method. Open fire was also used for firing. When the potter's wheel was found towards the end of the Early Bronze Age, pottery began to be made on the wheel. Pottery wheel production is frequently encountered in Hacıbektaş district as an example of pottery.
